When my friends Jake and Keegan showed me The Venetia Fair on a drunken weekend night, my mind was blown. They capture every bit of crazy to make a perfect “clusterfuck” of musical genius. When I first heard they were making …Basically Just Does Karaoke I was very excited for what could come out of it. Then I saw the bands they were covering (Queen, Green Day, The B52s, Dexy’s Midnight Runner, The Blood Brothers, and Coheed and Cambria) I was a little nervous for this release. Nevertheless, this is a very solid release for The Venetia Fair.
Starting …Basically Does Karaoke with “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen is possibly the boldest move this band could have made. From the opening notes sung by vocalist Benny and the perfect backing harmonies, I found myself with my jaw on the floor. Every bit of this song shows off how talented The Venetia Fair is.
Dexys Midnight Runners’ “Come on Eileen” is next up and it continues to show off how talented The Venetia Fair is. From the piano, to the power and passion behind the vocals, to the driving guitars in the chorus, The Venetia Fair pulls you deeper into their weird world of music. The next song, the B-52s hit “Rock Lobster,” is recognizable to many from the TV show Family Guy, and I liked to picture Peter singing with Benny’s voice coming out. The term “clusterfuck” comes in handy during the bridge of this song when there is Benny yelling “Boys in bikinis, girls on surfboards” over the rest of the band going absolutely crazy on their instruments.
After “Rock Lobster” the band goes into the slow song on the EP “Jesus of Suburbia” by Green Day. The song doesn’t seem to start off with as much power as the previous songs do, but its a nice break from headbanging. Once the song gets to the “I dont care if you don’t” part of the song, the headbanging resumes to full force and tomorrow morning I will have a grade A bangover.
The last two songs are the only songs that I have never heard before. The Blood Brothers’ “Camouflage, Camouflage” starts off with a groovy guitar riff over some yelling/screaming vocals, and some fancy piano work. Once it gets into the chorus the song slows down into a catchy singalong. My absolute favorite part of this song is the bridge, the piano maybe my favorite part about this entire EP and they show it off in this song. The last song is “The Willing Well III: Apollo II: The Telling Truth” by Coheed and Cambria. I am not a fan of Coheed(sorry) but after listening to this cover I will be checking them out again. Once again this is another track that will cause you to have a sore neck after listening to.
If you haven’t heard of The Venetia Fair before …Basically Just Does Karaoke you should check out their previous albums, The CIrcus and Every Sick Twisted Thought We’ve Got in Our Brain. If you couldn’t tell already, I really enjoyed …Basically Does Karaoke, and it’s made it onto my iPhone for daily listening. I often find myself singing these songs in my head while delivering pizza to the beautiful people of Waterville, Ohio.
