London-based Rod Thomas, also known as Bright Light Bright Light, recently released a five-track EP, I Wish We Were Leaving. With three songs, two remixes, and a feature by the extraordinary Elton John, I was very excited to review this EP.
The first track, “I Wish We Were Leaving,” features Elton John and is such a beautiful, strong song. It is the type of song that gives you courage to move on. What I got from the song is that even when you no longer mean something to someone, there will always be someone else that you will be good for. It was definitely the best track to start the EP with.
Listening to the second and third tracks, “Matters” and “She Carves Her Desire,” all I could think about was being at a music festival. Bright Light Bright Light has that type of vibe that just makes you love music. It’s feel-good music that makes you want to watch them perform and dance. He puts a lot of emotion into his songs, and the beats just add to it, making him sound almost like a combination of Coldplay and Daft Punk.
The final two tracks on the EP are remixes of the first song, “I Wish We Were Leaving.” As much as I would have liked to hear more original songs, these two remixes made up for it. They were so different from each other that it sounded like I was listening to three different songs. The Severino Remix sounded like a song that would be played at a disco- it was very old fashioned, while the DJ Nita Remix sounded upbeat and cool, like something that could be played at a club. Both tracks sounded nothing like Bright Light Bright Light’s chill summer-like vibe, but went well on the EP.
I absolutely love the ’80s/’90s electro-pop vibe I got from this EP. It is very different from what you would hear from many artists today. This EP left me wanting more. And if you felt the same way, Bright Light Bright Light have an album being released in July. You can preorder it HERE.
