Canadian trio The Dirty Nil have released yet another 7″ EP of chaotic garage punk to add to their extensive collection of short form releases. This being their second of the year behind February’s 5 track release ‘Smite‘.
The track ‘Cinnamon‘ boasts solid studio quality yet manages to still sound gritty and raw as it drives its self into your ears. Mixing clean vocals with distorted guitars to become scarily catchy, and later bringing in the layered vocals and staccato finish is so well written you can’t help but replay it.
‘Guided By Voices‘ straight away leaps into a much more aggressive and even grittier approach with its high tempo initial count in from drummer Kyle Fisher. And then a slower second count in which still leads to a manic two and a quarter minutes with extremely melodic vocals and has a similar tone to a lot of the work of FIDLAR. With bursts of calm which lead straight back into the heavy mess that is always so satisfying.
Unfortunately only lasting four and a half minutes, Cinnamon/Guided by Vices is a mighty fine release squeezing an awful lot of substance into its limited time .We certainly look forward to a full release from these guys in the future. But we will accept another slew of EPs because they clearly know what they are doing.
Cinnamon/Guided by Vices is out now and available from Fat Wreck Chords right here
