To coincide with the 40th anniversary of The Ramones debut self-titled record, acclaimed director Martin Scorsese is to be at the helm for a biopic about the legendary New York punk band.
Scorsese is best known for critically acclaimed films such as Gangs of New York, Goodfella’s, Shutter Island and The Wolf of Wall Street. No stranger to directing films of celebrated bands, Scorsese had great success in 1978 with the documentary “The Last Waltz” about (what was meant to be) The Band’s final concert appearance.
It is lesser known that Scorsese is a fan of punk music in particular the Boston based Celtic-punk band The Dropkick Murphys who were heavily influenced by the Ramones and included on the soundtrack to his first Oscar winning picture, The Departed. Combined with Scorsese’s experience in films about the seedy underbelly of New York in which the Ramones made their way.
The Ramones biopic is set to hit cinemas in 2016.
