Koo Koo Kanga Roo opened for MC Lars in October at a new venue, Thunder Road in Somerville, MA, as part of the Joyful Smiles Tour.
The show was 21+, an odd occurrence for Bryan and Neil, whose typical audiences are made up of elementary school children, but they brought an infectious energy that spread to everyone in the venue. MC Lars’ projector added a new layer to their performance, allowing images of kittens, dinosaurs, and 80’s cartoons to be shown behind them as they danced across the stage. The Koos entered the audience a few times, calling on members of the crowd to sing and dance along, and, as is tradition, to hold up an elementary gym-style parachute for their closing number, “Awesome Rainbows”. While some of the more “mature” adults in the audience may have been sceptical of Koo Koo Kanga Roo at first, by the end of the show their boundless enthusiasm (and maybe a couple of drinks provided by the bar) convinced even the most solemn audience members to dance along to Koo’s peculiar brand of pop.
